My new gloves are part cashmere, part spandex, part conductive fingertips, and 100% awesome. They’re so warm and I can use my phone with them. They’re like those stretchy “magic” gloves, only they’re actually warm. Love!

Tuesday’s quote from my desk calendar:

Things turn out the best for the people who make the best of the way things turn out.

John Wooden

Appropriate for election day, no?

We’ve started working on Christmas music at choir practice. I love Christmas music! This year I won’t be home to sing with the Choir on Christmas day, but we should at least make the best of the octave and sing some more Christmas music on December 30th. My favorite one that we’re working on is “O Magnum Mysterium” by Tomas Luis de Victoria. If I were at home, I would link a video for you (maybe I’ll do that later).

I think I’m getting a cold. My throat has been itchy and a little gunky the last two days. Today I’m drinking tea and taking zinc lozenges to try to stave it off. What do you do to prevent a cold from knocking you out?

Say what you will about her and her system, I love Flylady! In case you’re not familiar with FlyLady, she helps you learn how to keep your home clean, organized, and in running order. You can get an e-mail feed that tells you what to focus on. I get the feed, and though it has a lot of advertising and testimonials, it also has daily “missions” that only take 15 minutes or so. Each week, she focuses on one “zone” of the house. This week’s zone is the kitchen. The missions have helped me get my kitchen pretty clean this week. To me, clean is comfortable. Organized would be even more comfortable, but I’m working on that. FlyLady reminds you that you don’t have to be perfect, just take baby steps and do what you can. If you make routines and make things fun, you’ll get them done.

Last night I made up a recipe. I had a pound of ground beef in my freezer and I didn’t want pasta, because I’ve been eating it for lunch this week. I decided to brown the meat with homemade taco seasoning, add a can of diced tomatoes and about two cups of cooked brown rice. Then I added a couple of cups of frozen broccoli because I try to get Brett to eat green things as much as possible. It took about 15 minutes to warm the broccoli through, and it was really tasty. It would have been even better with some shredded cheddar or Monterey jack cheese. Brett put a bunch of hot sauce on his, but he always does that. I am a big fan of quick food that doesn’t have a bunch of fake ingredients. Do you have any favorite quick “from scratch” recipes?
